The Contract for Life, created by Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), is an agreement that teens will never accept a ride from a driver who has been drinking alcohol or using other drugs. Previous research by Dr. John Knight and Dr. Sion Kim Harris shows that teens who received a Contract for Life at their pediatrician’s office were at a significantly lower risk for riding in a car with a driver who had been using alcohol or drugs compared to patients who did not receive a contract. We suggest that parents and teens age 12-17 have a discussion about this contract, and make a plan for safe rides home.
